About the Event

ABOUT THE SHOW

City Winery New York in collaboration with the World Music Institute presents Natu Camara live in concert on Sunday May 22 at 8 p.m. Crowned the “Tina Turner of Guinea” by fans, the West African-native and Harlem resident Natu Camara draws inspiration from artists like Nina Simone and Fela Kuti to produce her Afro pop and rock sound. As a founding member of West Africa’s first all-female hip hop and R&B trio and following the success of its debut album “It’s Not a Shame to be a Woman,” Camara and her bandmates became icons of female empowerment on the continent and organized festivals promoting music and mentorship. Performing in five languages with influences spanning the globe, Natu Camara’s music is a melting pot of energetic and soulful sound. One of the brightest stars coming out of the West African nation of Guinea (now based in NYC) and founder of West Africa’s first all-female hip hop group Ideal Black Girls (IBG), Natu Camara is a singer/songwriter who weaves beautiful musical tapestries of her beloved homeland. Singing in five languages, she uses her songs to build cultural bridges and to share her commitment to the education and empowerment of women and girls. Like her artistic influences including Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, and Baba Maal, her uplifting message is wrapped in a blend of afro-rock, pop, and soul that will inspire you. Recent critical praises come from sources such as the New York Times, Brooklyn Vegan, Afropop Worldwide and NPR Music. "As a builder of inter-cultural bridges, Camara uses her songs to bring people together, weaving a tapestry of musical stories and visions of her beloved home. "  - Bob Bolin (NPR Music, Tiny Desk Concerts)
